Culinary tourism is a growing trend – Grand View Research estimated the market at US$11.5 billion in 2023 and projects it to reach a mouth-watering US$40 billion by 2030 – and hotels and resorts across Asia are increasingly seeking to claim a slice of that pie by hosting their own special gastronomic events.

This autumn sees a number of events featuring star guest chefs being hosted across the region; here are some of the most interesting.

Bangkok, Thailand (September 22-28)

First up is the 25th edition of the World Gourmet Festival (WGF), to be held at the Anantara Siam Bangkok between September 22 and 28. The event brings together chefs from 16 Michelin-starred restaurants (Choi Ming-fai Jan, from Hong Kong’s Mora, among them) in a range of experiences, including one-off collaborations between star chefs and solo tasting menus from international legends (from 6,500 baht/HK$1,565 to 18,500 baht per person). There will also be panel discussions, masterclasses and mixology experiences. worldgourmetfestival.asia

The capital will also host, between September 25 and 28, the finale of Marriott International’s Luxury Dining Series, a programme that has been rolling through group properties in Osaka, Singapore and Jakarta (St Regis; September 11 to 13), and will culminate at Bangkok’s Ritz-Carlton.

Themed Forgotten Flavours and inspired by Marriott’s “Future of Food 2025 Report”, which reveals growing demand for immersive experiences and heritage cooking, the Bangkok finale will task a roster of chefs – including the Ritz-Carlton’s own David Toutain; Adam Catterall, from Hong Kong’s Roganic; and Louise Hong Kong’s Loïc Portalier – with highlighting traditional ingredients and techniques from around the world.
