Since the internet boom at the turn of the millennium, companies and individuals have depended extensively on the internet for virtually all their business and social needs. Never before has the world been so interconnected at such a global scale.

The downside of this interconnectivity is the increased exposure to fraud and other forms of malicious use of information technology (IT). To protect themselves from these threats, prudent users must be armed with the relevant tools that will enable them to reap the benefits of the information superhighway.

"M.Tech leads in this niche of cybersecurity and network performance optimisation with our best-of-breed solutions," says Stanley Foo, CEO of Multi-Chem, the parent company of M.Tech and a listed company of the main board of the Singapore Exchange. "We have invested heavily in our technical capability to ensure that the IT network systems of our end-users are not compromised."

The beginning

Foo founded Multi-Chem in 1989 to distribute precision drills and routers, and materials for fabrication of printed circuit boards. Later on, it began to offer drilling services in Singapore.

"A friend of mine called me one day asking if I had an extra space in my factory for an old drilling machine," Foo says. "The guy was upgrading, and he also asked me if I wanted to subcontract some of the drilling work for him."

Multi-Chem progressively expanded to Suzhou, Kunshan and Wuxi in China to support factories that were relocated there.

"Our success has always been driven by our straightforward attitude towards business," Foo says. "We are nimble to swiftly adapt to market changes and always act decisively and resolutely."

This company ethos led Multi-Chem to establish its IT security business, M.Tech, in May 2002.

The present

Today, M.Tech distributes cybersecurity products for global vendors such as Blue Coat Systems, Check Point Software Technologies, Imperva, MobileIron, RSA, Skybox Security and Trend Micro.

Excellent technical support

Beyond implementing cybersecurity and optimising system performance, M.Tech also provides training and after-sales technical support. M.Tech's dedication to its excellent technical service is exemplified by its 24/7 hardware replacement programme. With such comprehensive support, users are assured that their systems remain reliable.

"Companies cannot afford downtime when it comes to internet security," Foo says. "If a person fails you, it is manageable. But if your cybersecurity is breached, that is unacceptable. Technical support is a highly critical aspect of our service."

With its presence across major cities in Asia, M.Tech is capable of providing full support to regional customers in-country.

"Let us say a client wants to deploy an application across eight sites. They simply contact us, and we would dispatch our engineers simultaneously," Foo says. "We bring the equipment to the site, and our engineer stays there until his colleagues arrive at their respective assigned work areas. Then, they can start testing all at once."

Foo cited the wide-area-network optimisation project the company has helped to implement for one of Australia's biggest banks. The programme was designed to accelerate data flow across the bank's various offices to improve productivity and efficiency. To accomplish the task, M.Tech sent engineers from Singapore to complement those based in its Australia office.

The promising future

Leveraging its excellent track record and high cybersecurity awareness, M.Tech is poised for further growth regionally. The continued expansion of virtualisation, cloud infrastructures and mobile computing is seen to drive the demand for cybersecurity. Market research company TechNavio forecasts the global network security market to grow by 8.2 per cent annually through 2018.

In anticipation of positive market trends, M.Tech will continue to pursue organic growth while adopting a multipronged approach to address the needs of the individuals and enterprises in various regions. To accomplish this, the company is open to collaborating with more system and network integrators, resellers and service providers.

M.Tech also acknowledges that it owes its successes to the fair, open and business-conducive platform that Singapore has provided. With this Singapore platform, M.Tech is able to support its resellers and customers efficiently across the region.

On Singapore's Golden Jubilee, M.Tech, also on behalf of the Multi-Chem family, says: "Happy 50th birthday, Singapore."
