First the Filipino great Manny Pacquiao launched his boxing comeback at 46 years old, and then came the improbable re-emergence from retirement this week, at the same age, of Englishman Ricky Hatton.

Also returning to the professional ring – from the amateur ranks – after eight years’ absence is Hong Kong’s comparatively youthful Rex Tso Sing-yu, who, days before turning 38, has announced a bantamweight bout in Manila next month.

Tso switched to amateur boxing in 2019 to target the Olympics. He has not fought professionally since 2017’s technical decision win over Kohei Kono of Japan at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, but as far as he is concerned, if Pacquiao and Hatton can come back, so can he.

Once ranked the world’s No 1 super-flyweight by the WBO, he still harbours a bold aim: to be the first Hongkonger to become a boxing world champion.

“My love for the sport prompted the return, and if boxers who are seven, eight years older can return, why can’t I do the same?” the veteran southpaw said.

“I still have my world champion dream, and I was so close before. It’s not easy to make such a fight happen, so I want to charge towards my goal once again, and make it happen.”
