Hong Kong’s men’s curling team still have a chance to win the city’s first ever Asian Winter Games medal despite defeat in their semi-final against South Korea on Thursday evening.
The city’s squad of Jason Chang, Martin Yan Ho-tin, Cheng Ching-nam, Chung Cheuk-hei and Ma Chi-lap were outclassed 13-2 by the South Koreans in Harbin.
They trailed 4-0 after the first end and 9-0 after the second, leaving too steep a mountain to climb.
However, that result sent them into the bronze medal match on Friday morning, when they will face China.

Earlier, the Hongkongers had defeated Kazakhstan 8-5 in their qualification play-off, which swung one way then the other until Hong Kong pulled clear in the final three ends.
A medal, on the first occasion Hong Kong has sent a curling team to the Games, would be a groundbreaking achievement. The city has taken part in six Asian Winter Games since the first one in Sapporo in 1986, without success.
In the other semi-final on Thursday evening, the Philippines beat China 7-6 in a tight match that went to the eighth and final end. They will meet the South Koreans for gold on Friday.
In women’s curling, Hong Kong were beaten 6-3 by Kazakhstan in their last round-robin match, and missed out on a semi-final berth.
Also on Thursday, the men’s ice hockey semi-finals brought a 3-1 loss for China against the Kazakhs, and a 4-3 success for Japan over South Korea.
China won gold in biathlon’s women’s 4x6km relay, while Japan triumphed in the men’s 4x7.5km relay.
In the women’s single skating, South Korea’s Kim Chae-yeon took gold after the free skating round. Hong Kong’s Joanna So finished 11th and Chow Hiu-yau was 14th. The men’s competition was won by Kim’s countryman Cha Jun-hwan.
