Even as the National Games medal tally of Hong Kong’s athletes continues to climb, we sometimes wonder if we’ll run out of ways to say their feats are unprecedented.

But here’s a new one: on Monday, one of the city’s best-known stars has a chance to win two medals in little more than five minutes. It sounds like something one would attempt for a bet or a forfeit, but it’s just a quirk of the schedule.

The city’s ambitions to reach the podium in fencing and cycling on Monday may seem somewhat modest by comparison, when they are not.
