Supporters savoured Manchester United’s presence in Hong Kong as the English club contributed to a lively spectacle in Friday’s friendly match against the city’s representative team.
Playing their second fixture of a two-match Asian tour, United won 3-1 and offered more bang for spectators’ buck than was the case in their midweek defeat by Asean All-Stars.
On that previous outing in Kuala Lumpur, they were jeered at full-time and deemed by coach Ruben Amorim to have lacked hunger.
Jason and Wing were among those in attendance at a rain-lashed Hong Kong Stadium, along with their “superfan” son Cyrus, 15.
“I’m so excited,” Cyrus said.

Jason, an under-16 coach at Hong Kong Jockey Club, paid for the most expensive tickets, priced at HK$2,990 (US$381) each, which he described as “reasonable”.
Asked whether he believed in Amorim, Cyrus said: “Yes, I trust him.”
Alex Worsley paid HK$1,100 apiece for tickets for himself and nine-year-old son Max. “It’s obviously a lot to watch a friendly involving a 15th-placed Premier League team, but we live in Hong Kong and love United, so we’re going to go either way,” he said.
Max had misgivings about Amorim. “He seems to have fallen out with [Alejandro] Garnacho, who is one of our few decent players, and I don’t like the formation,” he said.
While Max may not have lived through the club’s glory days under Alex Ferguson, his dad said the decision over which team he would support was taken for him.
“This is Max’s first ever game watching United live, and he has been very excited for the last few weeks,” Alex said. “He didn’t get much of a choice about which club to support – it’s a shame for him he wasn’t born in the 90s.”
Anson, sporting a shirt with Diogo Dalot on the back, said he was “not bothered” by the player’s absence. Dalot, Harry Maguire and Andre Onana left the squad after Wednesday’s match in Malaysia to attend a meet-and-greet with sponsor Apollo Tyres in India.
“I paid HK$990 and I think it’s OK,” 34-year-old Anson said.
