The business end of the Hong Kong Football Festival arrived on Saturday, the latest in an increasingly long line of mega-events driving an economic and tourism boom.
On Saturday, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu revealed there had been a 17 per cent jump in overseas visitors compared to the first six months of last year, and plenty of them have travelled for Liverpool’s game against AC Milan.
The Premier League champions are well supported in Hong Kong, as are their Italian rivals, and fans created a lively atmosphere around Kai Tak Stadium.
Gone was the heavy rain that hammered Milan during their training session on Friday, replaced with bright sunshine and blue skies.
The match packed in plenty of action, so read on to recap the day’s events from Kai Tak.

Welcome to a baking hot Hong Kong for the pre-season friendly between Liverpool and AC Milan. I think everyone involved is going to be thankful for the air conditioning inside Kai Tak Stadium.
The game is expected to kick off at 7.30pm local time, which is about 2½ hours from now.
Still, crowds are already building at the sports park for the latest major event at a venue that has already hosted the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, Coldplay and a host of other major events this year.




Here we go

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has been talking about the city’s tourism, and reveals visitor numbers are up 12 per cent in the first six months of the year.
In a Facebook post, the city leader says there were around 24 million visitor arrivals in the first six months, with mainland arrivals up 10 per cent to about 17.8 million and an impressive 17 per cent jump in overseas tourists to 5.84 million compared to the same period last year.
Lee put that down to a string of artistic, cultural and sports activities that reflected the city’s “appealing ‘East-meets-West’ tourism elements and its growing attractiveness in the international tourism market”.


A tourism boost

Liverpool’s game with AC Milan isn’t the only match taking place during the city’s inaugural football festival, we’ve got Arsenal and Tottenham up next week.
That will be the first North London derby to take place outside the UK, and could bring the likes of Son Heung-min to our shores.
Here’s our guide to the four clubs, how they fared the last time they played in Hong Kong, and who fans can expect to see on the pitch at Kai Tak Stadium.


Who’s who

The PA system at Kai Tak Stadium has just been rehearsing the line-ups, and if the announcement is anything to go by, some of Liverpool’s big stars are set to start the match from the bench.
Chief among them is the “Egyptian King” Mohamed Salah, who is joined on the bench by some more of Liverpool’s star-studded forward line: Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nunez are substitutes for the evening.
The news will come as a nasty reminder of when Inter Miami rolled into town in February 2024, and Lionel Messi watched the entire match from the bench and didn’t even bother to wear football boots.



A Messi affair?

Liverpool and AC Milan have had very different experiences of Hong Kong so far, not least when it came to training.




Wet weather training

Liverpool fan Joe Wan has been supporting the club for almost 40 years, but has yet to visit Anfield, something he plans to rectify when youngest son Jaco, 7, is old enough.
A fan since 1988 when the legendary striker Ian Rush was scoring “lots of goals”, Wan says he used to idolise Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp, and believes being a Liverpool fan is all about “sticking together”.
“[The dark days] are alright, we as fans are all used to losing,” he says. “But after Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, we are now on another wave of success.”



Red through and through

A little Aztec Camera anyone? No, only me then. Although in fairness, we could have gone with The Clash given our subject’s surname.
Either way, I blame Rosanna Law Shuk-pui for getting one particular ear worm in my head. The city’s secretary for culture, sports and tourism is among the fans doing some pre-match shopping at Kai Tak Mall.
And while the Liverpool fans are outnumbering everyone, Law, a Manchester United fan who has been buying Tottenham merchandise, and sports commissioner George Tsoi Kin-pan are quietly going about their business.
“It’s summer time and we have two big football matches in town, of course it’s a good thing,” she says, adding she’s happy with the atmosphere in the city.




Summer in the city

While fans are arriving in large numbers, most are still outside, meeting up and checking out the souvenir stalls. It’s absolutely swelteringly hot.
They’ll feel mightily relieved once they step inside, where some of the Post team are now set up. The sound system is pumping out the tunes and the all-important stadium air con is on full blast.
A few dozen Milan fans are filing into their section in the South Stand, while Liverpool supporters are beginning to take their places in the North.



Air con available

AC Milan superfan Andy Yang has travelled further than most to watch his heroes play this weekend.
Based in Los Angeles, Yang arrived in the city on Thursday having opted to watch the game here, rather than his team’s game against Arsenal in Singapore last Wednesday.
“I just feel like supporting this team is a huge part of my life,” he tells the Post. “AC Milan went to LA about two years ago and I was there, too, so it’s great to see them again in this beautiful city.”



West heads East

John Sharkey, the project director of Kai Tak Sports Park, tells the Post that tonight’s sold-out spectacle will “demonstrate what the investment in Kai Tak has been about”.
“It’s hot and humid, but in climate-controlled conditions, we’ll see some of the best football on the planet played in Hong Kong in the middle of July, in a way that couldn’t have happened without this stadium,” Sharkey said.
“We’re delighted to host this first Festival of Football in line with the ambitions we had for this venue.”


Money well spent

You might think reading this blog that it’s entirely staffed by Liverpool fans, which is not true. There’s only one, but for some reason, trying to find an AC Milan fan to talk to has proved a challenge.
Not any more. Wang Tianyi has been talking to us after spending HK$1,800 (US$230) on a couple of jerseys and a scarf for himself and his girlfriend.
As the 37-year-old IT worker from Hangzhou stands in line to get an autograph from AC Milan’s Alexandre Pato and Serginho, he has mixed feelings about tonight’s game.
“We might have a tough time today, but I think we’re going to go back to the place where we deserve to be: the top club of the world,” he says.



Finally, a Milan fan

Contrary to the announcement earlier on the stadium PA system, which said Mohamed Salah would be on the bench, the Egyptian will in fact start.
Liverpool have released their teamsheet for the evening, with Salah listed among the starting XI.
Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are still on the bench and there is no spot for Darwin Nunez, with many Liverpool fans saying on social media that it all but confirms his exit from the club.
Nunez, who only managed five goals in 30 matches in the Premier League last season, has been linked with a move. Among the interested clubs? Today’s opponents AC Milan.


Salah starts after all

Elvin Pan, 30, flew from Beijing to see his beloved Liverpool and was one of the first fans through the gates when they opened at 5.30pm, two hours before kick-off.
Pan said he arrived early to soak up the atmosphere, and was also mindful of a tribute to be paid to the late Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player who died in a car crash three weeks ago.
“I also heard that because my seat will have the tifo for Jota, I need to get here early,” he said.



Early through the gates

Talking of Diogo Jota, an official Liverpool supporters club in Hong Kong and Macau is calling for fans to participate in a memorial ceremony for the late star before this evening’s match.
Fans seated in the North Stand’s Liverpool fan zone, sections 216 to 221, from rows A to GG, have been asked to take their seats by 6.45pm.
They will find a red or white paper on their seat and are being asked to hold it up when Liverpool start a memorial ceremony at around 7.10pm.


Jota ceremony planned

Irene Chan is a local Liverpool fan of more than 25 years who has been to the home of the Reds and even gone to find their training ground.
“At that time, information was not well developed, and there was no navigation on mobile phones,” she recalls.
“I was relying on an actual map and had to buy my match ticket on the phone.”



Intrepid explorer

Under one hour to kick-off and a sense of occasion is gradually developing.
In the South Stand housing Liverpool’s fans a giant, self-congratulatory tifo is unveiled. Paying tribute to the club’s supporters, it reads, “12th Man, Stand Together”.

New AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has put out pretty much his strongest available XI.
Mike Maignan, the Rossoneri’s first non-Italian captain in 60 years, starts in goal with Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao in attack.
Pervis Estupinan, who only joined from Brighton two days ago, is on the bench.


Milan mean business

Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Hong Kong’s secretary for culture, sports and tourism, is joined on the pitch by the local football association chairman Eric Fok Kai-shan and Wilfred Ng Sau-kei, chairman of the government’s Major Sports Events Committee.
They dot the eyes of a dragon, which “brings it to life” and officially opens the event.
Spectators are then treated to a dragon dance – something Hongkongers will have seen many times but which will be a new experience for many visitors.




Officials launch festival

In the Kai Tak Dining Cove, wine merchant Marco Ma relished the festival because his business thrives on event-day custom.
The 32-year-old seller says plenty of people have been buying wine.
“I guess people just want to have drinks before going to the game,” he says.



Fine wine

Given it is two decades since Liverpool and AC Milan played out that epic Champions League final, there has been a disappointing amount of chat on the subject this week.
Mind you, one of those involved in that crazy night in Istanbul still hasn’t watched the game.
Three down at half-time, Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek made some amazing stops as his side fought back and ultimately won penalties. But watch that performance? Not a chance. Apparently he’s “too scared” of the emotions it might bring up.


20 years later

AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan is among the first players to begin warming up and is greeted with a smattering of cheers from fans in the North Stand, which is now nearly full.
But a bigger roar goes up for his opposite number, as Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker appear. They are joined minutes later by Milan’s outfield players, who pair up for dribbling and passing drills.
Liverpool fans in the South Stand chant for their team, scarves raised, and the biggest cheer so far drowns out the booming music momentarily as the Premier League champions take to the pitch.


Players on pitch

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has left Hong Kong and returned to the club’s training ground following an Achilles issue.
“He was, of course, with us for the first part of the week, but he had some Achilles problems,” boss Arne Slot says via social media. “We thought it was better to assess it back in England.”
He adds: “We hope and expect to have him back soon.”

Gomez departs

Liverpool claim to have about 1.2 million fans in Hong Kong, and more than 27,000 of them turned out to watch the Premier League champions train at Kai Tak this week.
But who are they, where do they watch games when they can’t get to Anfield, and what made them pick Liverpool in the first place?
Andrew Cesare Richardson has been meeting them to find out.



Slot’s Red Army

Lost? In the North Stand’s Liverpool fan zone, we find a father-and-son pair of Arsenal fans.
Melvyn Ford is bringing his son Flynn, who wears a Real Madrid away jersey, to his first match in Hong Kong.
“My dad won’t buy me a Liverpool jersey just for this match,” the eight-year-old Flynn says.
Melvyn has instead paid for two HK$1,699 tickets for this match, and even more – a pair of HK$2,499 ones – for when their team, Arsenal, take on Tottenham here next Thursday.



Arsenal pair

Following a gripe from Virgil van Dijk over the state of the Kai Tak pitch after Liverpool’s training on Thursday, James Sharkey, the sport park’s CEO, moves to dampen worries.
Explaining that the Bermuda grass used in Hong Kong is prone to scuffing, he says stadium bosses are “not concerned about its condition”.
Apparently, the Reds staging their practice over a limited area would have exacerbated churning, but Sharkey expects a standard 90-minute contest to be devoid of issues.
While Sharkey says the ground is “looking fantastic”, as always, the proof of the pitch will be in the playing.


Pitch perfect?

Liverpool fans in the North Stand hold up the cards that were placed on their seats to form a red-and-white mosaic reading “DJ20” in tribute to the club’s late forward Diogo Jota, whose No 20 jersey was retired following his death in a car accident this month.

Jota remembered

Meanwhile one fan, Smith Cheng, in his 30s, decided to make a memorial booklet on his own, to remember Diogo Jota.
“After the tragedy, I felt the best way to remember him is to do something real, so I decided to produce a booklet and ask anyone to sign and leave a message for him,” he says.
“I reached out to the Portuguese Embassy in Hong Kong, and they will try send it to his family for me. I have collected over 100 signature and messages in this booklet so far.”



A fan’s own tribute

On the ground level of Kai Tak Arena, a few football fans walk via the Otter in a Pot restaurant to check out its menu.
Erica Lee, one of its kitchen staff, explains that they have had a lot more customers than a regular day.
“During normal days, there are not a lot of people that come this way,” she says, grateful for the festival footfall.



Festival of footfall

Liverpool players will wear shirt numbers featuring Chinese imagery tonight. It’s very much a one-off arrangement, but that message has not reached some of the supporters commenting on social media.
The club’s account posted a string of pictures of the players’ jerseys hanging in their Kai Tak dressing room.
Among the printable reactions is one describing the designs as an “eyesore”, while another calls for a prompt end to Liverpool’s relationship with their kit manufacturer.
We’re sure the shirts will go down well here though.


Chinese-themed shirts

The organisers are really enjoying getting spectators on the big screen here at Kai Tak, but is that now a risky business?
We refer of course to what happened during a Coldplay gig in the United States last week, when a “kiss cam” accidentally exposed this couple.
Here we have “tube cam”: fans are supposed to dance like those inflatable tube people on the roadside, but the reaction has been a bit, shall we say, deflating. Confused fans just wave at the camera, or look embarassed as they’re caught munching a hotdog.

One of the chief architects of this Hong Kong Football Festival tells the Post that the “world is watching” events in the city this week.
Rachael Carroll, the managing director of promoters TEG Sport, believes other major clubs are watching closely, with “a high level of interest, and … I think we’ll see football back very soon”.
Carroll adds: “Hong Kong has all the ingredients you need, passionate fans, a world-class stadium, a very supportive government. All those ingredients make it very attractive for football and other events.”


The world is watching

Some lusty cheers as the names of AC Milan’s starting 11 are bellowed by the stadium announcers, who could do with dimming their volume. They are nothing to the ear-splitting reaction to the Liverpool team, however.
And the teams are out on pitch for the moment we’ve been waiting for.




Almost kick-off

A Football Festival banner is unfurled in the centre circle, the lights are dimmed and fire spurts from all around the pitch.
The lights come back on as The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” blasts from the speakers. And finally, we are under way.


The Liverpool shirt numbers are a lovely idea, but not helpful for those of us watching from high up and needing to identify players.
Their golden hue is barely visible on the back of the red jerseys. That is definitely Mo Salah right beneath us, though.
And Milan, wearing the new yellow kit they launched at Kai Tak yesterday? No such problems, and we at the Post thank them.


Just a blur

We have our first piece of meaningful action as Virgil van Dijk excites supporters with a surge through the middle, only to run into trouble as he arrives within sight of goal.
Only a few minutes in, but AC Milan are chasing shadows. They have barely had a kick.

Things change quickly in football, don’t they.
Rafael Leao breaks clear from halfway, strides into the penalty box from the left as Van Dijk backs off, and rifles a rising left-foot shot past Alisson Becker into the top right corner. 1-0.
Alisson had just saved from Christian Pulisic then Leao, but this time, with 10 minutes gone, the Reds keeper is helpless.

Milan goal

A curling right-foot chip from Dominik Szoboszlai brings the Reds level.
Gravenberch’s long diagnoal pass finds Rio Ngumoha, who looks to square it, hits a defender, then passes it to Szoboszlai. His beautifully struck shot finds the top corner, and that’s 1-1.




Liverpool equalise

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who was named captain this summer, is the club’s first non-Italian skipper since 1961.
The departure of Davide Calabria at the end of last season meant the role had to be passed on, with new manager Massimiliano Allegri giving the Frenchman the nod.
Since Swede Nils Liedholm left in 1961, the Rossoneri have had notable long-serving captains, not least father and son Cesare and Paolo Maldini, and Franco Baresi.



Milan’s leader

Mo Salah, one of the main attactions here tonight, gives the Kai Tak crowd a couple of moments to shout about.
He curls a shot marginally over as Liverpool try to reassert themselves. And he volleys another shot over to draw a sizeable roar.
As for the record biggest signing by a British club, Florian Wirtz – all US$156 million of him – he comes to life with a change of pace to help create the first of those chances for Salah.



Salah-watch

There’s a roar for a lovely backheel from Milan’s Alexis Saelemaekers, which eliminates three Liverpool defenders – a rare audible show of appreciation for Milan. Large sections of the crowd have even taken to booing any prolonged spells of Milan possession.
We had been wondering at the start what effect a Milan goal would have on the atmos. When that first goal arrived, it briefly sucked the life out of Liverpool fans – the overwhelming majority here.
They were then craving a bit of excitement and they got it from Szoboszlai. Now they wait for more.


Milan hush Reds

Half-time arrives with the score 1-1.
There have already been two pre-arranged drinks breaks – which begs the question of how many stoppages we would need without Kai Tak’s much-lauded air conditioning.
We all take a moment to breathe.


Half-time

Going back to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk’s concerns about the pitch at Kai Tak cutting up, he may have had a point.
The grass looks like it has taken more wear and tear than some Premier League pitches after a full season of action.
Reserve players from both sides are out there during half-time for a kickabout. The surface is also being hosed down by two giant sprays.




Pitch update

AC Milan’s big summer signing Samuele Ricci has looked tidy on the ball in the centre of midfield.
The Italy international, who joined from Torino this summer, had big shoes to fill after Milan lost one of their key players from last season when Tijjani Reijnders moved to Manchester City.
Ricci has shown some neat touches so far.

Some classic football entertainment: fans from each side taking penalties against mascots.
And when Liverpool’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is played over the stadium PA, there’s a rousing singalong from the North Stand, many fans raising scarves or Jota shirts aloft.
Szoboszlai’s prize for his goal? Some half-time sprints, overseen by a coach. The sight of him, Salah, Van Dijk and others working out is a reminder that we are watching a pre-season friendly. They have a season to get in condition for.


Interval fun

The second half begins, signalled by tonight’s referee. That, by the way, is Tam Ping-wun, a Hongkonger.
He is getting a rare chance to officiate two elite European teams. Tam was last seen taking charge of Eastern’s FA Cup final victory over Rangers back in May.


HK ref restarts

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has restored Milan’s lead after 52 minutes at Kai Tak.
It starts with a sloppy pass from keeper Pietro Terracciano, which almost goes out of play before Noah Okafor saves it and plays a defence-splitting pass to Rafael Leao.
Leao is through on goal but has Liverpool players hot on his heels and passes to Englishman Loftus-Cheek, who pokes it past Alisson. It’s 2-1.



Milan back ahead

And Milan score again. Noah Okafor claims it.
The Italians’ second goal had already stunned the majority in the stadium, and now Milan land another blow on the Reds with 59 minutes gone.
A crisp pass across the box from Belgian Alexis Saelemaekers finds Okafor, who hits it first time into the back of the net.


It’s 3-1!

Gravenberch raises the volume with a long-range strike that cracks the top of the bar.
And after being subdued for a spell, Liverpool fans are interested again as a shot blasted by Jeremie Frimpong, one of the club’s new recruits, brings a fine save out of Pietro Terracciano.


Crossbar

There are about 15 minutes plus stoppage time left at Kai Tak and Milan lead 3-1.
But we have (kind of) been here before, and this is where we return to the context of these two teams playing each other here.
Their famous – Milan fans would say infamous – meeting in the 2005 Champions League final passed into legend because Liverpool were 3-0 behind yet came back to draw 3-3 then win on penalties.
Could the Reds claw this back? And if we are level at full-time, the teams will again settle it with a penalty shoot-out.



2005 reprised?

A little peek behind the curtain: the Post has reporters covering the match action in 15-minute stints. One reporter had two goals at the start of the second half; his replacement has been treated to an absolute snooze since then.
The players take another drinks break.
On the resumption, more boos from Liverpool supporters as Milan hog possession. In a sign of most fans’ loyalties, the man-of-the-match award – decided by fans in a live vote – currently has Szoboszlai way out in front. In a top five dominated by the Reds, who trail 3-1.




Down time

Could the spirit of 2005 be about to surface?
Cody Gakpo has just scored for Liverpool. It’s 3-2 to Milan as we enter stoppage time.
The Dutchman had an opportunity minutes earlier only to slice it wide when he might have done better. This time, he heads the ball back across goal and past Peitro Terracciano.




Comeback on?

A swift answer there: no, a comeback is probably not on.
Milan immediately score again through Noah Okafor. 4-2.
It’s chaos for Liverpool as a stray backpass to substitute goalkeeper Girogi Mamardashvili is intercepted by Okafor, who hares away from Mamardashvili after picking his pocket.
He taps it into the empty net.




Milan again!

It’s all over at Kai Tak Stadium. AC Milan have beaten Liverpool 4-2.




Final score

There are 49,704 fans inside Kai Tak, which is a record attendance for the new stadium.
Szoboszlai stayed in front in the voting by fans in the stadium, who made their choice using a QR code, and is named man of the match.
And now the Standard Chartered Trophy is to be awarded to Milan. Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Hong Kong’s secretary for culture, sports and tourism, is among the party of officials gathering on the pitch for the ceremony.



Ceremonial duties

After a long list of introductions, Milan are getting their hands on the silverware.
Cue pyrotechnics and glitter cannon. But of course.
It’s the climax of a lively and highly enjoyable night here at Kai Tak Stadium – don’t let any disappointed Liverpool supporters tell you otherwise.
The Italian club were superior on the night. And one can’t argue with six goals to entertain us, plus a galaxy of stars to admire.

Trent Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid this summer. Awkward, for owners of Alexander-Arnold shirts?
Perhaps not, now that the Reds are believed to be trying to buy Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.



Nicely customised

Kai Tak Stadium has largely emptied.
Still here, though, are a couple of thousand fans, mostly of Liverpool, who have stayed behind at the front of the stands in the hope that some players will re-emerge from the dressing rooms.
Never mind the match: the important business for some is a chance to get their merch signed or a selfie with one of their heroes.
They have not been told to leave, so it looks like they will be in luck.



Selfie hunters

It’s time to call time on matchday one of the Hong Kong Football Festival.
There has been much to enjoy on Saturday, with the city set abuzz by a sense of occasion and receiving a visible economic boost as thousands of happy shoppers snapped up souvenirs.
Then the lights dimmed at Kai Tak Stadium, before an explosion of colour and a flurry of goals as Liverpool took on AC Milan, to the joy of almost 50,000 fans.
