Hong Kong football boss ‘shocked’ to land job, downplays permanent hopes after dream start
Darren Read oversees League Cup semi-final victory in first match after being installed as interim Lee Man head coach

Darren Read acknowledged he was “a little bit shocked” to be thrust into the breach as interim Lee Man head coach, and downplayed his prospects of landing the permanent role.
Promoted from assistant following the exit of Chu Siu-kei on Sunday, Read made a dream start three days later when he oversaw a League Cup semi-final victory over Tai Po, then relayed news to his audibly thrilled players that their triumph had secured “an extra bonus from the big boss”.
They will meet the winners of next week’s last-four clash between Kitchee and Kowloon City in the final.
Chu left his post hours after an FA Cup quarter-final defeat by BC Rangers that all but ended Lee Man’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s AFC Champions League Two.
“I was a little bit shocked [to be appointed] … but I’m not in the position permanently, I’m going game by game,” Read said.
“I’m not asking for the job, and nobody’s mentioned anything about the future. I’ve not thought about taking over full-time, I’m just here to work. I’m a member of staff and that’s it.”
