Hong Kong cyclist Leung Wing-yee said she is hoping to make it third time lucky when she competes in the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia.

The 25-year-old Leung will be given a glimpse of just how good the top riders are when she starts in the 34.2-kilometre time trial on Saturday, before taking part in the 164.3km mass start road race six days later.

“I could not finish the road race on my two previous attempts in 2017 and 2018 and my target in Wollongong will be finishing the race,” she said.

“There will be a lot of climbs in the route, which suits me as a lightweight rider, but the difficulty will also increase as the top riders will tear you apart during the climbs.

“I am happy to know world No 1 Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands will be there also and it will be an excellent opportunity to watch her.”

Leung Wing-yee thought she had already lost the opportunity of making her third appearance at the Road Worlds, after she was denied the chance to take part in July’s Hong Kong Championships because of the city’s pandemic restrictions.
