Hongkongers have been urged to unite behind the city’s athletes and “cheer them to greatness” in this year’s National Games.
Eight events are being staged in the city as it jointly hosts the 15th edition of the Games along with Guangdong and Macau.
With excitement mounting as the November 9 start date speeds into view, leading figures from cycling and triathlon said fervent support from the locals would “make all the difference” in their hunt for medals.
More than 300,000 tickets are set to be released for the Hong Kong-based competitions, with the first wave of sales beginning on August 28. Track cycling will be held at Hong Kong Velodrome from November 13 to 17.
Herve Dagorne, the city team’s cycling head coach, called it a unique opportunity.

“Hosting the National Games track cycling is a moment of great pride and excitement for our city,” he said.
“It will be a unique opportunity for our riders to compete at the highest level in front of passionate home crowds, creating an unforgettable atmosphere and a truly special sporting occasion.
“We invite the public to come and cheer on the Hong Kong team; their support will make all the difference.”
Cycling delivered both of Hong Kong’s gold medals at the last National Games, in 2021: for Sarah Lee Wai-sze in the velodrome and Ceci Lee Sze-wing on the road. Sarah Lee claimed a track bronze, too, a feat matched by Leung Ka-yu to give the city four cycling medals, in addition to two fencing bronzes and one bronze from karate.
Dagorne has set his track squad a four-medal target for this year’s meeting.
“We need voices in the stands to come together to push Hong Kong to victory,” the Frenchman said. “We are thrilled to have this event here … we want people to come to support us and be part of the energy.”
Daniel Lee Chi-wo’s 2009 bronze is all that Hong Kong have to show for their previous National Games triathlon efforts.
Hopes are high, nonetheless, for home success on a Central Harbourfront course that head coach Andrew Wright has called the best in the world.
Bailee Brown and Wong Tsz-to have already secured qualification to compete in the Games for the city’s team, and Wright is poised to select his final four squad members following this month’s Asia Triathlon Championships. Hong Kong claimed mixed-relay bronze behind Shandong and Liaoning in March’s Games test event, held at the harbourfront.
Chau Chiu-nam, the president of the Triathlon Association of Hong Kong, China, said her anticipation was heightening in advance of Hong Kong’s debut as a National Games host.
“The countdown is igniting our collective passion,” Chau said. “Every stroke, pedal and stride of our triathletes carries the dreams of Hong Kong. Let their courage inspire us all as we cheer them towards greatness.”
