China’s diving starlet Quan Hongchan finished a disappointing fifth in the 10-metre synchronised event on Thursday and could only watch on as her Olympic partner took the No 1 spot in Guangzhou.
Shanghai’s Chen Yuxi, who won gold in the same event with Quan in Paris last year, scored 350.22 points with Zhang Minjie at the Guangzhou Olympic Sports Centre.
In second at the National Games competition were Sichuan’s Li Ruixi and Lu Wei with 322.44, while Jiangsu pairing Liu Junxi and Meng Zerui came third with 316.44.
Quan and Wang Weiying, representing Guangdong, were given a total of 311.76 from the judges.
Despite Quan being regarded as one of the greatest divers in the world, Thursday’s competition was never in doubt as the pair from Shanghai raced into the lead from their first jump.
Chen and Zhang also topped the heats, with Sichuan’s divers in second and Quan and Wang in third.

Earlier, Hong Kong rower Chiu Hin-chun gave himself a chance at a National Games medal after easing into the men’s lightweight single sculls A final, but there was a second defeat for the city’s men’s senior basketball team.
With only 10 rowers contesting his category, Games debutant Chiu needed to be in the top six in the preliminary round at the Guangdong International Rowing Centre in Guangzhou, and he completed the course’s 1,500 metres (0.9 miles) in five minutes and 5.6 seconds to rank third in Group 1.
Anhui’s Zhu Bohao finished first in 5:03.66, with Chen Wei-chun, representing Guizhou, second in 5:04.21. Li Chengchao of Zhejiang also reached the medal race after crossing the line fourth in 5:07.30.
“I knew it was going to be a final-like preliminary race and everybody gave their all,” Chiu said. “I am satisfied with my overall performance; I did well and everything played out according to my plans.
“Though there was some difference in terms of expectations as I didn’t finish in the top two or even top the group, I still managed a spot in the medal race.”
In Group 2, Gu Jiantao, who finished fifth in September’s World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, was first in 5:05.76. The Sichuan representative was joined by Ma Yule of Shandong, who posted 5:07.10.

Chiu, an Asian Games bronze medallist in Hangzhou in 2023, said he was happy to race against the best rowers nationwide.
“The National Games is just massive, with its scale as big as the Olympics,” the 31-year-old said. “This is the highest-standard event in China and I am happy to compete here.
“Zhu and Chen, who finished ahead of me in the group, were really fast, so they are people to watch out for, on top of Gu. I want to finish with a faster time for a shot at the podium.”
With his next race not until Monday, Chiu said his plan was to “train normally, conserve energy and prepare for the final”.
“I just have to maintain my weight at the level of 72.5kg [160lbs],” he added. “That will allow me to have a more stable performance.”
Winne Hung Wing-yan also reached the A final in the women’s event after finishing third in her group.
In basketball, the city’s men fell to their second defeat in as many games, going down 117-84 to Sichuan.
Following a 24-point loss at the hands of Shanghai a day earlier, Hong Kong took on the pre-Games favourites, who boast former NBA player Zhou Qi and national team member Hu Jinqiu.
Having trailed by only eight points at half-time, Hong Kong were outscored by 25 points in the second half. Hong Kong Bulls guard Ricky Yang led the team with 21 points. Captain Hu led all scorers with 33, while Zhou chipped in 25 to go with 12 rebounds.
Hong Kong will face Hubei on Friday before finishing their group adventure against Henan on Saturday.
