Hong Kong triathlete Coggins escapes ‘black hole’, ready to peak at National Games
Tokyo Olympian in ‘best condition of my life’ and excited for home Games, as mum jets in to lend support

Oscar Coggins has said the lessons learned since he quit his Asian Games triathlon two years ago have enabled him to reach “the best condition of my life” for the National Games races this weekend.
Now rehabilitated, reinvigorated and looking supremely fit following a hard five-week camp in the southwest mainland province of Yunnan, Coggins is “excited to show the work I’ve put in over the past year and [ready to] deliver a good performance for the home crowd”.
The 26-year-old, who gained selection following a stellar fourth-placed effort at August’s Asia Triathlon Championships, said: “It’s great to represent Hong Kong at this level again … I feel I earned my place and have the potential to get a really good result.”
An athlete who has contended with multiple sicknesses, Coggins said the past six months, which also included a successful six-week camp in the Pyrenees, had been “incredibly smooth, with no injuries or illnesses”.
“Before, I was always trying to squeeze out 110 per cent on one day, then losing 50 per cent over the next week,” he said.
