Hong Kong badminton star duo Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet may take shot at LA Olympics
Mixed doubles pair considering keeping their careers going beyond Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya this year to reach the 2028 showpiece
Hong Kong badminton mixed doubles duo Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet have admitted they are considering prolonging their careers for a couple of years to try to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
On Tuesday, the reigning champions were knocked out in the first round of the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, losing 19-21, 21-19, 21-7 to China’s Chen Xing and Zhang Chi after winning the opening set.
Tse revealed before the tournament that Tang had been encouraging her to continue playing.
The veteran pair formed in 2016, but they split briefly at the end of 2024 before renewing their partnership just months later. Since restarting together, they have won their first regional title and earned more medals in Thailand and Singapore.
“In hindsight, it was the right and amazing decision to get back together,” she said. “I thanked him for his trust because I was struggling with the decision, but he kept encouraging me, so I decided to come back.
“There was a lot of pressure coming back, but our two new coaches [Tan Bin Shen and Jeremy Gan] introduced many new elements that have helped us to continue improving. Tang kept asking if I could ‘play on for two more years’, which is very tempting, so let’s wait and see.”
