“One for the old guys!” was how veteran darts player Paul Lim described his dramatic comeback win over Luke Humphries at the PDC World Championship in London on Friday night.
“At the end, it was a battle,” the 66-year-old said after sealing the win with a double 20 finish. “I kept telling myself to put pressure on him. I had to dig deep.”
The “Singapore Slinger” came back from 2-0 down against the 25-year-old Humphries, who was not born until 1995 – by when Lim had already played 12 world championships.
With this win the Hong Kong-based Singaporean became the oldest player to record a victory at the PDC World Championship.
Lim spoke of his years of experience being helpful during a match that he described as “like quicksand” and the coronavirus pandemic.
“I think I play more darts than ever,” he said of staying inside during the pandemic. Lim also joked that he imagined a crowd at Alexandra Palace, where the tournament is being held behind closed doors.
