Ariarne Titmus smashed the 200 metres freestyle world record on Wednesday in one minute 52.23 seconds at the Australian Swimming Trials in Brisbane, shaving 0.62 seconds off the previous mark set by her friend and compatriot Mollie O’Callaghan.

In an enthralling race, O’Callaghan finished second in 1:52.48, also blitzing through the world record time she set at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Aussie Lani Pallister hit the wall in 1:55.57 to seal third place.

Titmus is now the world-record holder for the 200m and 400m freestyle, and is the reigning Olympic champion in both events.

“Looking at the results, that’s unbelievable,” Titmus said poolside after the race.
