Hong Kong fencing head coach Zheng Kangzhao is looking forward to the rest of the action-packed 2026 calendar, with the world championships on home soil and the Asian Games the two stand-out events.

The city is hosting the FIE Fencing World Championships for the first time in July and Hong Kong fencers will travel to Japan for the Games later this year, hoping to improve on their record medal haul in Hangzhou in 2023.

“This year, our two most important events are the world championships, which Hong Kong is hosting [for the first time], and the Asian Games, a four-year competition that is extremely important for Hong Kong and for our whole sports community,” Zheng said.

“Of course, we will continue to work hard and prepare carefully and I hope to bring more surprises to Hong Kong citizens and to our supporters.”

But the coach was not looking too far ahead, stressing the team has a number of other events before the Games and they would take it step by step.

“We do not have to focus purely on the Asian Games right now,” Zheng said. “Before the Asian Games, there are many competitions, and many of them are actually laying the foundation for that event. That is why we also need to perform well in the tournaments that come before the Asian Games.”
