Hong Kong’s top women’s player Doo Hoi-kem was eliminated from the ITTF World Cup in Macau on Wednesday, after losing a group-stage match 3-1 to China’s Wang Yidi.
Doo’s exit follows that of teammate Lam Siu-hang the previous night, ending Hong Kong’s participation in the tournament. Lam, like Doo, also finished second in his group.
Doo fell 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 to her friendly rival, finishing the group stage with one win and one loss to place second and missing the 16-strong knockout round.
Wang described the encounter as “a wonderful match”, with both athletes performing well.
“Doo started very quickly, particularly in the first three strokes,” she said. “I perhaps didn’t handle the service returns very well. Her loops are occasionally quite deep.”

Wang noted that winning the third game was crucial, admitting she was “fortunate to get a net cord” against Doo at 9-8.
World No 35 Doo took the initiative early, building a 3-0 lead. Although the score was tied at 5-5, she won three consecutive points to lead 8-5 and secured the opening game 11-8.
The second game remained competitive, with the score fluctuating within a two-point margin. Wang pulled ahead to 8-4 after winning four consecutive points, but Doo used service variations to close the gap to 7-8. Following a tactical timeout, Wang held off the comeback to win 11-8 and level the match.
Early leads were traded in the third game. After a 4-4 tie, Doo struggled to gain the upper hand in long rallies and lost 8-11.
The world No 8 then opened the fourth game with a 7-0 run. Doo was unable to recover, losing the set 4-11 and the match 1-3.
Both players are 29, but Wang maintains a perfect head-to-head record over three meetings. Their most recent encounter was a 3-1 win for Wang at the WTT Singapore Smash in February.
Meanwhile, world No 1 Sun Yingsha continued her dominance on Wednesday, beating Egypt’s Dina Meshref 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-7) in just 22 minutes to advance to the last 16.
Sun’s teammates, world No 3 Chen Xingtong and world No 6 Kuai Man, also advanced to the knockout stage after winning their matches on Wednesday.
Chen defeated Chinese Taipei’s Yeh Yi-tian 3-0, while Kuai secured a straight-sets victory over Amy Wang of the United States.
Other Chinese players in action later on Wednesday for spots in the last 16 include Liang Jingkun, who lost his opening round and will face German veteran Dimitrij Ovtcharov, and world No 1 Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu, who face Australia’s Finn Luu and India’s Sreeja Akula respectively.
