Hong Kong could play host to the next “Battle of the Sexes” with tennis stars Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka rumoured to be working on a rare man-versus-woman clash in the city.

A potential match between the pair could take place in the lead up to the Australian Open in January, although Hong Kong officials said on Thursday that nothing had been confirmed at this stage.

Peter Johnston, director of international events for the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, added the governing body was always looking for ways to boost the sport in the city.

“Showcasing Hong Kong on the global tennis stage is a key priority for us, and we are constantly exploring different potential opportunities,” Johnston said. “Other than the upcoming Davis Cup and the UTS HK event in October, we do not have anything to announce at this stage.

“We will continue to timely share information on our events as and when appropriate.”

What seems to be certain is that the match will take place, and Kyrgios said he would not even need to be at the top of his game to beat the women’s world No 1.
