Former US Open champion Marin Cilic will return for the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open next month, joining nine players ranked in the world’s top 50 who have signed up to take part.

Cilic, 37, who won the US Open in 2014, last played at the Hong Kong Open in January last year – when it returned for the first time in almost 20 years – but lost in the first round to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

That loss came during an injury-blighted period for the Croatian, when the former world No 3 fell out of the top 100 and managed just seven tour-level matches across 15 months in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The 21-time tour champion underwent a second knee surgery in May last year – after a first one in early 2023 – and won the Hangzhou Open title barely four months later.

Cilic then won the Girona Challenger in March this year for his first Challenger title since his previous one in 2007, setting a record for the longest gap between Challenger titles at 17 years and 10 months.

“I am looking forward to returning to Hong Kong after two years and starting my 2026 season at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open,” said Cilic, who re-entered the top 100 in June this year.
