Former DeepSeek researcher Luo Fuli says she has joined Xiaomi, months after the smartphone and electric vehicle giant reportedly approached the renowned Chinese artificial intelligence prodigy.
In a post on her WeChat account on Wednesday, Luo said she had joined Beijing-based Xiaomi, a move that is expected to burnish the company’s AI credentials.
“Intelligence will step beyond language into the physical world,” Luo wrote. “I’m at Xiaomi MiMo, with a group of creative, talented and sincere researchers to build a future like that.”
Launched in April, MiMo is Xiaomi’s first large language model (LLM), which was developed using reinforcement learning under the company’s AI task force known as Core.
Xiaomi and its MiMO team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
The company’s months-long effort to hire Luo reflected the fierce competition for AI talent in China’s fast-developing and highly competitive AI industry.

Born in 1995, Luo became the face of China’s fresh AI talent in 2019 as a student at Peking University when her name appeared in bylines of eight papers at the annual meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics.
Upon graduation, Luo joined Alibaba Group Holding’s global research institute, Damo Academy. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
In 2022, she joined Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer Quant, which owns DeepSeek. Both firms were founded by Liang Wenfeng. Luo later moved to the Ai start-up as a deep learning expert and became a contributor to the development of DeepSeek-V2, released in May 2024.
Xiaomi’s billionaire founder and CEO Lei Jun later offered Luo “tens of millions” of yuan as salary to help push forward the company’s AI initiatives, according to local media reports. Neither Xiaomi nor Luo confirmed that offer.
According to Xiaomi, its MiMo-7B reasoning-focused LLM had outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Alibaba Cloud’s QwQ-32B models in certain benchmark tests, despite having a smaller parameter size.
Xiaomi’s Hong Kong-listed shares gained 1.7 per cent to close at HK$43.70 on Wednesday.
