Alibaba Group Holding’s new flagship artificial intelligence app Qwen was the fastest growing AI app in the world in November, according to third-party data released on Wednesday.

Qwen recorded the highest growth in monthly active users (MAU) among AI products globally at 149 per cent, data compiled by AI product popularity tracker Aicpb.com showed.

Its MAUs for the app reached 18.34 million, making it the world’s 24th most used AI app just two weeks into its public beta.

Qwen’s success stemmed from the strength of Alibaba’s underlying large language models, said Li Bangzhu, founder of Aicpb.com.

“Data trends have continuously shown that the world’s most popular AI products come from the teams with the strongest models,” he said. “Qwen’s explosive growth once again confirms this rule.”

Marketed as “the best personal AI assistant”, Qwen gives users access to multimodal AI tools, including deep research, image generation and slide creation. The app is powered by Alibaba’s Qwen family of foundational models.

Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
