The Ministry of State Security (MSS): A prominent Beijing-based governmental body, the Ministry of State Security (MSS) is the principal civilian intelligence, security, and secret police agency of the People’s Republic of China. Its primary mission is to safeguard national security through counterintelligence, foreign intelligence gathering, and maintaining political security, including defending the Chinese Communist Party. The MSS’s main areas of focus encompass domestic surveillance, cyber operations, and influence campaigns. Recognised as one of the world’s largest and most secretive intelligence organisations, it possesses broad powers, including the authority to arrest and detain individuals for state security offences.
