Quake drills before Tokyo Olympics show that Covid-19 is not only worry for delayed 2020 Games

Vanesse Chan

Olympic host city Tokyo has been conducting earthquake simulations in preparation for the delayed 2020 Games. The drills at the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center were held as geologists warned about the persistent threat of earthquakes in the quake-prone country. Japan has also been battling the Covid-19 pandemic, which sent Tokyo into a fresh state of emergency on July 12. Despite the alert, the Olympics will go ahead from July 23 to August 8, 2021, with infection control measures in place for visiting athletes and a ban on spectators at events.
