Departure of last American soldier from Kabul marks end of 20-year US mission in Afghanistan

The United States completed the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan at about midnight Kabul time on August 30, 2021, ending a 20-year US military occupation sparked by the September 11 terrorist attacks. The US Army released a photo by Major General Chris Donahue, the final soldier to board the last plane departing Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport.
