Thais turn to crocodile meat as pricey pork pulls pig off the menu for Lunar New Year feasts
As pork prices skyrocket ahead of Lunar New Year, many Thais are turning to an alternative white meat – crocodile. The country’s crocodile farms, which used to export to Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, are now finding growing demand for the tasty but tough meat at home. On average, some 20,000 crocodiles are now slaughtered for their meat each month in Thailand, a doubling of demand that has some farmers wondering if they can keep up.
