Activist who called for Thai monarchy reforms jailed for ‘royal insults’

Prominent Thai activist and lawyer Arnon Nampa was sentenced to four years in prison on September 26, 2023, for what a court judge said were "royal insults". Nampa was convicted under Thailand’s tough lèse-majesté law over a 2020 speech he made in Bangkok at the height of street demonstrations by the youth-led pro-democracy movement, where he called for a reform of Thailand's powerful monarchy.
