Vietnam’s environmental movement faces crackdown as another activist jailed for tax evasion

Hoang Thi Minh Hong has become the latest activist to be swept up in Vietnam’s crackdown on environmental campaigners. Hoang, who was jailed in September 2023, was the fifth environmentalist to be found guilty of tax evasion. Activists accused the government of conducting a “politically motivated” crackdown, saying their work posed a threat to the country’s economic interests, which are always closely aligned with state power.
