The death toll from a massive earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand rose above 1,000 on March 29, 2025, as rescuers dug through rubble in a desperate search for survivors the day after the magnitude 7.7 quake. Images have emerged from Mandalay, the city in Myanmar nearest the epicentre, showing toppled buildings, downed bridges and buckled roads. Shock waves from the quake caused damage as far away as neighbouring Thailand and China.
