Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on July 23, 2025, denied reports of his imminent resignation despite his party's recent loss of its majority in the upper house election. The reports followed Japan's finalisation of a trade deal with the US, which will reduce tariffs on Japanese goods from 25% to 15%. Ishiba had said after the election defeat that he must finish the important tariff negotiations with the US, but now that a trade deal has been reached, he called reports that he would resign "completely unfounded".
