A team ofJapanesescientists is analysing samples drilled from ice nearly 5,810 metres (19,000ft) above sea level in Tajikistan’s Pamir mountains. It is the only mountainous region on Earth where glaciers have been found to have not only resisted melting, but slightly grown despite global warming. The ice cores are being studied at Hokkaido University in Sapporo to understand why ice has endured in the region, in hopes that the findings could help protect glaciers that are rapidly disappearing elsewhere.
