A community kitchen has been cooking non-stop for six days to prepare servings of traditional rendang, a dish that can last three to six months.

Dozens of women in Indonesia’s West Sumatra cooked 2.5 tonnes of the famous Padang cuisine beef rendang on December 20, 2025, to help feed survivors of deadly cyclone-driven floods and landslides that have devastated Indonesia’s Sumatra island. The traditional beef dish, slow-cooked with spices, can last for months without preservatives. The volunteer kitchen has been operating non-stop for six days, and is preparing to ship the food to some of the areas that were hit hardest by the disaster.
