Nearly 300 firefighters tackle huge blaze in slum district of South Korean capital

Authorities in Seoul issued their second-highest level fire alert after a blaze broke out in a cluster of makeshift homes in a part of the city’s Gangnam district on January 16, 2026. Firefighters said they were concerned the blaze in the South Korean capital could spread to a nearby mountain.
