China real estate woes: Evergrande files for bankruptcy protection in New York

One of China's biggest real estate developers Evergrande filed for bankruptcy protection in New York on August 17, 2023, a move aimed to protect its US assets from creditors while it works on a US$3.2 billion debt restructuring plan. The move came as another Chinese real estate giant Country Garden also faces losses and is struggling to redeem its bonds.
