Taiwan unveils first home-built submarine to fend off possible attack from mainland China

Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen officially unveiled the island's first home-built submarine on September 28, 2023. The unveiling of the prototype vessel, named Hai Kun, came amid increasing military pressure from mainland China. The submarine was built with help from seven countries, including the United States and Britain. The island’s navy eventually aims to have a fleet of 10 submarines.
