Taiwan simulates attack from mainland China as island’s military conscripts begin extended service

Taiwan’s military is preparing for a scenario where mainland Chinese forces would turn one of their regular military drills near the self-ruled island into an actual attack. Taiwan’s exercises, involving navy vessels, troops and tanks, took place in the cities of Kaohsiung and Taitung on January 31, 2024, the same day the mainland People’s Liberation Army (PLA) staged a combat-readiness patrol. The drills came days after Taiwan’s first batch of military recruits began serving extended one-year mandatory service from January 25.
