Chinese President Xi visits Taiwan-facing island after PLA blockade drills

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a coastal island just across the Taiwan Strait on October 16, 2024, a day after the People’s Liberation Army wrapped up massive military drills around Taiwan. The Taiwan-facing Dongshan island has served as a regular base for PLA exercises in the past. According to China Central Television, Xi’s Dongshan visit was part of an inspection trip to Fujian province and included a stop in the coastal city of Xiamen.
