Xi Jinping marks 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to China

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Macau on December 18, 2024, for a three-day visit to mark the 25th anniversary of the former Portuguese colony’s return to Chinese administration. The president and his wife Peng Liyuan walked down a red-carpeted staircase from a jumbo jet at Macau airport, welcomed by chief executive-designate Sam Hou-fai, incumbent leader Ho Iat-seng and a delegation of top officials. Xi is expected to embark on an inspection tour of the city and on December 20, inaugurate Macau’s new administration.
