How China’s LGBTQ community navigates between expression and censorship online
While LGBTQ content is not explicitly banned in mainland China, its creators face a harder time maintaining a presence on social media
Andred Han is among many Chinese LGBTQ content creators who have found it increasingly difficult to post material online. Until recently, Chinese social media platforms such as Douyin, RedNote and Bilibili provided the community with a space for expression, even as their presence on mainstream media has been shunned. However, with China’s leadership starting to push for a return to a more traditional and conservative societal outlook, censorship has become more apparent and difficult to evade.
