China, US finish Stockholm trade talks with divergence on timing of tariff pause extension

China and the United States wrapped up their third round of trade negotiations in Stockholm, Sweden on July 29, 2025, diverging on the timing for another pause on tariff increases. The hurdle must be cleared before the world’s two largest economies reach a trade deal ahead of an August 12 deadline. Chinese Vice-Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang declared a consensus for an extension of the pause on tariff increases. But US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said any extension would be up to US President Donald Trump.
