Chinese self-propelled pontoon barge deployed for rescue work in flood-stricken Guangxi

Manufacturer Anneng says the barge can carry more than 500 people on a single trip.

Images of a foldable, self-propelled pontoon barge have been widely shared on social media after the device was deployed to rescue thousands of people trapped in severe flooding in southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The specialised barge was dubbed “China’s real-life transformer” in a post by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.
