A teenager from Shanghai recently lied to his parents about going on a post-exam holiday and instead travelled to the flood-stricken Guangxi region to aid in relief efforts. Wu Yulun and a friend responded to an online appeal for volunteers and used their pocket money to buy relief supplies to take to the city of Hengzhou, more than 13 hours from Shanghai. The 18-year-old had told his parents he was going to take a trip to the city of Wuxi, just outside Shanghai, to unwind after completing the gaokao – China’s tough national university entrance exam.
