Jilin bears brunt of China's Omicron surge, Shanghai hit by record rise in Covid-19 cases
Shanghai reported 24 new locally transmitted Covid-19 infections with confirmed symptoms and 734 asymptomatic cases on March 21, 2022, uncovered, authorities say, by a recent mass testing drive. In China’s worst-hit province of Jilin, 1,542 locally transmitted cases were reported, accounting for 79 per cent of all cases recorded nationwide on March 21. Two deaths have also been reported, making them the first fatalities recorded since January, 2021. Mainland health experts say maintaining China’s “dynamic” zero-Covid strategy remains crucial to keeping infections under control.
So far 37,000 local infections have been confirmed nationwide for the month of March.
