Young diners ‘time travel’ back to ancient China

Driven by ‘emotional consumption,’ Chinese youth are finding solace in splurging on the immersive experience of travelling back to the past for a meal.

Chinese youth are increasingly choosing to spend their money to dine in a Qing dynasty themed restaurant. Customers get to wear traditional hanfu outfits and walk around a pebbled courtyard, stopping to snap photos under a pavilion. Although the world’s second-largest economy has been beset by sluggish domestic demand, many young people are still spending on experiences that connect to a deeper emotional need, a trend recently dubbed “emotional consumption” in China.
