China and the US have agreed to a 90-day pause in their tit-for-tat tariff war, which saw US levies on some Chinese goods rise to more than 140 per cent before the May 14, 2025, deal brought them down to 30 per cent. The “ceasefire” has provided a much-needed reprieve for importers and exporters on both sides of the Pacific, but it has caused disruptions in global trade. Aside from the flip-flopping, finger-pointing and name-calling, what does the trade war look like on the ground in China, and how is it impacting ordinary people there?
