As it happened: Clashes erupted in Hong Kong on China’s National Day

A teenage protester was hit by a live police bullet and required multiple surgeries during one of many clashes in 13 locations across Hong Kong on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. 

The violence in the city cast a shadow on celebrations in Beijing marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
