Heavy police presence in Hong Kong stops mass commemoration of June 4 Tiananmen Square crackdown

Hong Kong police shut down Victoria Park on June 4, 2021, to stop people from gathering for a banned candlelight vigil commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Officers also set up roadblocks at major thoroughfares to check vehicles. For the second year in a row, police objected to the mass gathering, citing Covid-19 restrictions. But 2021 is also the first June 4 anniversary since the passage of the Beijing-imposed national security law. Hongkongers found other ways to remember those who died in the 1989 crackdown, including attending church services or lighting candles on the street.
