India’s Maha Kumbh Mela festival, dubbed the world’s biggest religious gathering, opened on January 13, 2025. More than 400 million Hindu devotees and tourists are expected to take a dip at the confluence of three sacred rivers over the next six weeks. A sprawling temporary tent city of over 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres) has sprung up along the riverbanks to house the visitors.
