News of the sudden death of Taiwanese actress and host Hsu Shiyuan – better known as Barbie Hsu or “Big S” – has sent shock waves across the internet. Fans posted tributes after Hsu’s family said in a statement that she died after contracting influenza while travelling in Japan. The flu reportedly triggered pneumonia that took her life on January 3, 2025. Hsu became popular for her starring role in the 2001 TV drama Meteor Garden and for decades had performed with her younger sister Dee, also known as “Small S”.
