The Hong Kong preppers surviving in the wild and training for disaster

Nadeem Shad

In remote and often forgotten parts of Hong Kong’s tropical forests and mountainous areas, a group of men and women meet up on weekends several times a year to learn how to survive disasters. Some members are part of the Hong Kong Survival Association, a local community group that aims to share practical information and conduct training for disaster prevention in Hong Kong for when catastrophe hits. They say on their Facebook page that Hong Kong’s society only knows how to make money and has forgotten basic survival skills. Some choose to identify themselves as “preppers” – a term often used to describe survivalists people who actively prepare for future disasters. The Post decided to meet up with two members in August 2021 to see what the local prepper movement is all about.
