Parents fear impact of China's zero-Covid measures as post-lockdown college entrance exams begin

Tom Wang

Gaokao, China’s national college entrance examination, is among the most competitive tests in the world, as this year’s gaokao got under way on June 7, 2023. It’s the first gaokao since China lifted Covid restrictions in December 2022. The Post spoke to several parents outside a testing centre in Yanjiao, a small city in Hebei province, 35km (22 miles) east of Beijing, where many expressed worries that China’s three-year strict Covid controls had greatly reduced their children’s chances of entering a good university.
